Junior Art Club (JAC)
A city of three million people, Accra, the capital of Ghana is a cosmopolitan city with international flair. Many adolescents from rural villages flock to the city, attracted by the possibilities of money and modernization. While Ghana supports a relatively stable democracy, unemployment rates are high and poverty is an everyday reality for most of Ghanaians. Many of Accra's youth are forced to work menial jobs and live in urban slums, where they are often exposed to violence, abuse, crime, the sex industry, and drugs. The danger of their developing permanent delinquent behavior is very real.
Through workshops, exhibitions, competitions, field trips, performances and weekly art classes, the JAC uses visual and expressive arts as a means of engaging Accra's youth in positive, esteem-building activities. JAC provides Ghanaian youth with the tools to express themselves in a creative, non-violent manner and the opportunity to not only learn artistic skills, but also life skills.
Founded by Kelvin Asare-Williams, a writer and graphic artist, JAC is completely run by volunteers. With the help
of the Wells Mountain Foundation and several other foreign donors, the JAC opened a office and gallery in
central Accra in 2005 and a Multi-Media center in 2006. JAC is committed to supporting, inspiring, and
empowering Ghana’s youth through the arts.
